Attestation Services

Attestation services is frequently sought by myriads of institutions for example overseas law firms, Embassies and High Commissions of foreign countries, educational institutions like colleges and universities, Immigration authorities, and many other institutions. Before delving into the services we provide, it would be pragmatic to discuss the differences amongst attestation, verification, legalisation, and apostille because it often creates confusions amongst the general people and requires individual authority for the types of services a person wants.
  • Attestation: Attestation is the process by which the person who is attesting the documents states that the photocopies of the original documents are indeed true photocopies of the original documents. This process however does not attest the authenticity of the original documents.
  • Verification: This is the process by which it ensures and verifies that the original documents are indeed genuine. The genuineness of the documents could only be verified by the issuing authority of the documents. For instance, if the original documents are the marksheets or transcripts of a person, it would be the issuing university or the education board who would verify the marksheets or the transcripts whether they are genuine or not.
  • Legalisation: Legalisation is the official confirmation that a signature, seal or a stamp on a document is genuine. Usually, the documents which are being legalised are often public documents such as civil status, court orders and others. The purpose of legalisation is to make the document suitable to use in another country. For example, if the document is from the UK or other country, it would need legalisation before it could be used in Bangladesh. It does not however, confirm the documents content is correct, rather it confirms that it is in correct format and signature, seal or a stamp on the document is genuine.
  • Apostille: Apostille is similar to legalisation. However, it is only valid within the 91 countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. The list of the countries could be found here. Bangladesh is not an active member of the Convention. In this process it issues a certificate that authenticates the sign and seal on a public document for the use in another country. It also authenticates that the person who signed and sealed the document has the official authority to do so. If it is used in between two member states of the convention, then there are no further steps however, if one of the countries is not a member, then the document has to be legalised in the non-member state. It is often conducted by the Embassy or the High Commission of the non-member state present in the member state. For instance, if a document originated from the UK is to be used in Bangladesh, then the document needs to be legalised in the UK by the High Commission present in the UK.
